Hem and Haw——猶豫不決

    !! Recorded in 1786, “hem and haw” is an “echoic” phrase, the words of which imitate the sound of clearing one’s throat or making a slight noise to attract attention, signifying agreement, or expressing doubt. Centuries earlier similar expressions were such as to hem and hawk, hem and ha, and hum and ha.

    “hem and haw”記錄於一七八六年，是個“迴聲”短語，模仿清嗓子的聲音或發出輕微聲音以引起注意，表示同意或表達懷疑。幾個世紀前，有過類似的表達方式，例如 “hem and hawk”、“hem and ha”和“hum and ha”。

    !! When one is confronted with inconvenient questions, or just hesitating out of uncertainty, the first thing one does is to clear one’s throat（hem: ahem! or “hmmm –uh”） and then one stammers a bit until inspiration arrives（that’s the hawing）.

    當人們遇到難以回答的問題，或者因不確定而猶豫時，他們做的第一件事就是清嗓子（hem: 咳咳！或者“嗯嗯——呃”），然後結結巴巴地說話，直到靈感到來（這就是 hawing）。
