    !! According to the Washington Post, May 31, 1932, Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver（1854—1932） of Columbia, Missouri, made an impromptu address at a navy banquet before the Five O’clock Club of Philadelphia in 1899.

    根據《華盛頓郵報》在一九三二年五月三十一日報道，密蘇里州哥倫比亞市眾議員 Willard Duncan Vandiver（一八五四—一九三二）於一八九九年在費城五點鐘俱樂部舉行的海軍宴會上發表即興演講。

    John A.T. Hall, Congressman of Iowa, criticized him for being the only guest not in evening clothes. Vandiver retorted that Hall must have stolen his own suit, because it was so ill-fitting, saying “I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me （that the suit is yours）.” Thus, Missouri is often called the “Show Me” state.

    愛荷華州眾議員 John Hall 批評他是唯一一位沒有穿晚禮服的客人。Vandiver 反駁說，Hall一定是偷了他的西裝，因為那西裝太不合身。他說：“我來自一個盛產玉米、棉花、蒼耳和民主黨人的州，華麗的辭藻既不能說服我，也不能讓我滿意。我來自密蘇里州。你得證明給我看（這西裝是你的）。”因此，密蘇里州常被稱為“給我看”之州。
